S. Korea Edges NK 1-0 in WC Qualifier

Kim Chi-woo scored on a free kick in the 87th minute as the national soccer team edged North Korea 1-0 Wednesday night at Seoul World Cup Stadium.

In front of over 48-thousand fans, Kim unleashed a kick from the right side that curved toward the left side of the goal. The North's goalie, Ri Myung-guk, got a hand on the ball but it made its way into the net.

Kim also had a goal in the 2-1 exhibition win over Iraq Saturday.

South Korea retook the lead in Group B with eleven points and a goal difference of plus six, with the North falling to second with ten points.

The win broke four straight ties between the two Koreas, with the last win coming in the form of a 3-0 victory for the South in a 1993 World Cup qualifier.

South Korea is seeking its seventh straight berth in the World Cup, while North Korea is looking to make the cut for the first time since 1966.

South Korea has three qualifiers left, including one against the United Arab Emirates in June.

South Korean coach Huh Jung-moo has a record of ten wins and ten ties in 20 games since taking over in November 2007.
