S. Korean and U.S. Satellites Nearly Collided

South Korea’s Science and Technology Satellite-1 reportedly almost collided with a U.S. satellite last year.

The Satellite Technology Research Center at the Advanced Institute of Science and Technology said Saturday it was notified by the North American Aerospace Defense Command last September that the Korean satellite had nearly collided with a U.S. military satellite.

According to the U.S. aerospace agency, Korea’s Science and Technology satellite, which was rotating the Earth at ten p.m. on September 25th, slipped by the U.S. satellite by just four-hundred-31 meters.

That distance can be compared to two cars running at one-hundred kilometers per hour with a distance of just less than ten centimeters between them.

The satellite research center said though a clash between satellites is statistically unlikely, the possibility cannot be completely ruled out.

The research center’s announcement comes after a Russian and a U.S. satellite collided in an unprecedented incident on Tuesday, unleashing clouds of space debris.
