A team of domestic researchers has discovered a way to suppress the spread of cancer cells using stem cells.

The team at the Samsung Medical Center said Thursday that it successfully blocked the spread and multiplication of cancer cells by suppressing mesenchymal stem cells, or MSCs, with a hyperthermia-based treatment.

MSCs are multipotent stem cells that can mutate into various different cell types and are known to help stimulate the growth and spread of cancer.

The research team said that a group of cancer patients which received the treatment showed a significant drop in the spread of cancer cells compared to a control group.

The results of the research were published in the recent edition of the renowned medical journal “Cancer.”
