The Korea Meteorological Administration plans to introduce a third supercomputer to upgrade its weather forecast system this year.

The administration said Tuesday that it will select by April a proper model worth about 55 billion won and put it into operation in December as the second computer, introduced in 2004, enters its fifth year of use this year.

The new supercomputer will be set up at the national meteorological supercomputer center that is under construction in Cheongwon, North Chungcheong Province.

The new supercomputer's calculation speed is reportedly more than ten times that of the second one.
