New Year Gets Leap Second

Written: 2008-12-19 16:50:42Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

The Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science says it will add a leap second at 9 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

The move is in line with the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service’s decision to add a leap second to the last moment of 2008.

The world’s timekeepers decided to make the change to keep astronomical time, based on the rotation of the Earth, in sync with atomic time.
