Nation's Trees Absorb 34 Mln Tons of CO2 Annually

A research center has found that some 34 million tons of carbon dioxide is absorbed by forests every year in South Korea.

The climate change research agency under the Korea Forest Research Institute released its findings Friday after analyzing the amount of carbon dioxide in trees across the country.

The annual amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by trees is estimated to be around six percent of the nation’s carbon dioxide emissions.

South Korea's forests absorbed some two-point-three billion tons of carbon dioxide as of the end of last year.

The new finding is expected to contribute to lowering the nation's obligatory quota for greenhouse gas emission.

Researchers forecast that the rate at which trees can absorb carbon dioxide is expected to expand, citing that 61 percent of the nation’s forests are made up of young trees under 30 years old.
