The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has selected eight science projects as part of the government's grant program to support basic science researchers.
From Seoul National University, mathematician Park Jong-il’s research on the topology of four-manifolds and chemist Suh Se-won’s on protein structure have been selected. Also included are Pusan National University physicist Hong Deog-ki’s research on the gauge theory, Kyungpook National University physicist Hwnag Jai-chan’s on cosmology and Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology material scientist Lee Kwang-hee’s on solar cells.
For a period of five years, each researcher will receive a yearly research grant of 100-million won for theoretical studies or 200-million won for experimental studies.
In order to qualify for the grant, a researcher should have published a paper in a renowned international academic journal or have been cited at least one-thousand times in the fields of physics, chemistry or biology 300 times in earth science or 100 times in mathematics.
