Leap Second to be Inserted on Jan.1

Written: 2008-10-02 10:15:21Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

A leap second will be inserted into global time scales for the first time in three years in January to account for the Earth's rotation.

Japanese broadcaster NHK said Thursday that an extra second will be added on the morning of January first.

The planned insertion would be the 24th since 1972 and the first since January first of 2006.

A leap second is a one-second adjustment that keeps broadcast standards for time of day close to mean solar time.
