The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) says it will adopt an electronic protector system in the taekwondo competition at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The federation announced Sunday that it will set up an ad-hoc committee to deal with the procedural and technical aspects regarding the use of electronic protectors, which are expected to ensure fairer judging and refereeing.
Prior to the London Olympics, the federation said it plans to introduce the envisioned system at the next WTF World Taekwondo Championships scheduled for October 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The federation also plans to actively seek the introduction of a video replay system at taekwondo competitions, which will enable immediate correction of the referee decision in case of controversies.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, the federation issued a lifetime ban from all WFT championships on Cuban athlete Angel Valodia Matos, who kicked the referee in the head during the plus-80 kilogram bronze medal contest.
His violent reaction came after he was disqualified halfway through the bout for going over the time limit to receive treatment for a foot injury. Competitors are given a one minute time limit to treat injuries.
