South Korea has won a record of 13 gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, ranking seventh in total medal standings.
As of Sunday, South Korea won 13 gold medals, ten silver and eight bronze, placing second among Asian countries in overall medal standings after host country China. It marked the first time in eight years for South Korea to outperform Japan to be the second Asian nation to win the most Olympics medals. Japan secured nine gold medals at the Beijing Games.
The nation was able to surpass its initial target of securing ten gold medals and rank within the top ten thanks to remarkable achievements by its baseball team and taekwondo athletes.
In the past, South Korea had ranked 4th in the medal tally with 12 gold medals in the Seoul Olympics. It won 12 gold medals in Barcelona in 1992, seven in Atlanta in 1996, eight in the Sydney Olympics, and nine in the 2004 Athens Games.
Meanwhile, in the men’s marathon held Sunday morning, South Korea’s Lee Bong-ju, Lee Myong-seung and Kim Yi-yong failed to place in top rankings.
The nation’s athletes will return home Monday after attending the Olympics’ closing ceremony set to be held at nine p.m., Korean time, Sunday.
