No Individual Gold for Men's Archery Team

Korea's men's archery team has failed to win an individual gold medal for the 24th consecutive year.

Park Kyung-mo lost to Viktor Ruban of Ukraine by a single point, with a final score of 113-112, to settle for the silver Thursday.

The Korean was seeking to win Korea's first men's individual gold on his 33rd birthday, in honor of his late father who died of cancer in June.

Park and Ruban were tied after Park shot his first eight of the match. In their final shots, Ruban hit a ten while Park shot a nine.

Coupled with the finals loss of female competitor Park Sung-hyun, Korea lost both individual competitions for the first time in eight years.

In other news, North Korean shooting competitor Kim Jong-su was expelled from the Games after testing positive for a banned substance. He had nabbed the silver medal in the 50-meter pistol on Tuesday, and the bronze in the 10-meter last week.

In swimming, Park Tae-hwan failed to qualify for the finals in the men's 1,500-meter freestyle. He ended his Olympics with one gold and one silver.

In badminton, the men's duo of Hwang Ji-man and Lee Jae-jin lost 22-20 and 21-8 to China's Fu Haifeng and Cai Yun in the semifinals.

In table tennis, the women's team lost in the semifinals to Singapore, 3-2. For the men, world No. 10 Lee Hyun-il lost to Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in the semifinals.

In boxing, 2004 Olympic bronze medalist Baik Jong-sub dominated Thailand's Pichai Sayota in the 60-kilogram class, earning a quarterfinal berth with a 10-4 win.

The Korean baseball team beat Canada 1-0 thanks to a third-inning solo homer by second baseman Jeong Keun-woo.

In handball, the women's team lost to Brazil 33-32 in a group game.

Day 8 of the Beijing Olympics saw South Korea add 2 more medals to the total medal count. In the overall medal tally, Korea has 6 gold medals, 9 silver and 3 bronze.
