In Beijing, the 77-kilogram competitor lifted 163 kilograms in the snatch and 203 kilograms in the clean and jerk for a combined score of 366 kilograms. Li Hongli of China had the same score, but got the silver because of a slightly higher weight before the event.
The last Korean to win a weightlifting gold was Chun Byung-Kwan in 1992.
In soccer, Korea fell out of the Olympic competition despite beating Honduras, 1-0. Kim Dong-jin scored the game’s only goal in the 23rd minute.
Cameroon held Group D leader Italy to a tie, advancing both countries to the knockout stage.
In women’s badminton, the doubles team of Lee Hyo-jung and Lee Kyung-won qualified for the final after beating Japan’s Satoko Suetsuna and Miyuki Maeda, 22-20 and 21-15.
The Lee duo will face Friday the winner of the other semifinal between Du Jing and Yu Yang and Wei Yili and Zhang Yawen. Both teams are from China.
