GNP to Promote Remuneration for National Team Athletes

The ruling Grand National Party will promote a law revision to compensate athletes participating on a national team when they are wounded or die during training or an international match. The decision comes 20 days ahead of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

GNP floor leader Hong Joon-pyo unveiled the possible revision at a meeting of the party’s supreme leadership committee Monday. He noted that national team members don’t receive compensation from the government if they get hurt or even disabled during training.

Hong said that the party will promote the revision to relieve national team members from worries about injury and to help them focus on training.
