The two Koreas will go head to head in their third and final round of preliminaries for the 2010 World Cup on June 22nd in Seoul.
The South’s Korea Football Association said the North Korean national soccer team will enter South Korea on June 19th for the game. The team will arrive in Seoul by way of Beijing, China and return to the North on June 23rd.
It will be the first time in nearly 18 years for the South and North Korean soccer teams to face off in Seoul.
Initially, Pyongyang had suggested a third country or the nation’s resort island, Jeju, as an alternative venue citing concerns over the safety of its athletes, but Seoul declined.
The North agreed to hold the game in Seoul since the international soccer governing body, FIFA, would likely impose heavy fines and disqualify the team if Pyongyang forfeited the game.
