New Center to Digitize Korean Studies Data

The government will soon begin digitizing records on Korean studies including original ancient texts.

The Education Ministry says it'll invest two-point-eight billion won, or about two-point-seven million U.S. dollars, each year to build a Korean studies center. The funding, which will begin this year, will go to building a main center and regional branches.

The Academy of Korean Studies will be the main center and the Seoul National University Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies will be one of the four regional centers.

Data to be collected and digitized include family registers, maps, royal genealogy records and other royal books. Also included will be various historical, statistical, geographical and cultural records.
