The southwestern city of Gwangju has lost its bid to host the 2013 Summer Universiad to the Russian city of Kazan.

The International University Sports Federation in Brussels Saturday selected Kazan over Gwangju and Vigo, Spain.

During its final presentation before the vote, Gwangju officials showed President Lee Myung-bak's video message and made surprise offers including free airfare and accommodation in the city.

Kazan reportedly won the bid in a landslide in the first round of voting, defying the expectation that a second round would be needed.
