Astronaut Yi Returns to Earth Safely

The nation’s first astronaut, Yi So-yeon, has returned safely to Earth after completing her ten-day space mission at the International Space Station.

The Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) said the Soyuz TMA-11 spacecraft carrying Yi, U.S. astronaut Peggy Whitson and Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko landed in Orsk, Kazakhstan at 5:30 p.m.

The spacecraft made a dry-land crashdown about 480 kilometers off the expected landing site. The Russian space agency responsible for the mission made an official announcement 21 minutes after the landing.

Experts said the return module veered off target because it was tilted slightly during its parachuted landing.

All three on board including Yi were rescued by a helicopter search team and were said to be unharmed.

The astronauts will take a physical on-site and then take part in a welcoming ceremony at the Kustanay airport in Kazakhstan before leaving for Russia.

Then, they will fly to Russia where they will receive a full medical checkup and recuperate at the Gagarin Space Center for one week.

Twenty-nine-year old Yi will return home around April 28th.
