The Korea Handball Federation (KHF) will demand compensation from the International Handball Federation (IHF) for damages incurred from a match in January.
The Korean federation said the Korean women’s squad had qualified for the Beijing Olympics in that IHF-sanctioned rematch of the Asian qualifiers. It argued that the IHF must cover the cost of the rematch because the result was ruled invalid by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
KHF said it spent about 100 million won, or 100-thousand dollars, to transport the athletes back home and then to the rematch in Japan.
Meanwhile, the South Korean women’s handball team won an Olympic berth in a qualifying match Sunday in Nimes, France.
South Korea and Japan filed claims of referee bias in the original Asian qualifiers held last September. The IHF then ordered rematches of both the men's and women's qualifiers.
However, only South Korea and Japan took part in the January rematches. Other Asian countries - including disputed women's winner Kazakhstan and disputed men's winner Kuwait
- stayed out in protest.
The Asian Handball Federation brought the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, challenging the IHF-sanctioned rematches. The international arbitration body upheld the result of the men's rematch, but ruled the result of the women's rematch invalid.
