Korean and U.S. research teams claim to have jointly found a new type of protein that helps cure arteriosclerosis by increasing "good" cholesterol, while decreasing intravenous fat accumulation.

Professor Kang Heon-joong at Seoul National University said that his team, in collaboration with U.S. researchers, have confirmed that a nucleic receptor protein called PPAR-Delta, which is said to be an effective cure for obesity, is also a strong cure for arteriosclerosis.

The research result has been published in the latest edition of a U.S. National Academy of Sciences journal.

The research is expected to become a breakthrough in developing medicines for cardiovascular diseases.
