First Korean Astronaut Moves to Launch Site

The nation’s first astronaut Yi Soyeon will move to Kazakhstan’s Baikonour Space Center Wednesday.

The government said Yi and backup trainee Ko San will leave for Kazakhstan, where the Russian Soyuz spacecraft will launch next month.

Yi will fly to the space center with Soyuz’s Captain Sergey Volkov, astronaut Oleg Kononenko and other crew members. The backup team including Ko San will fly separately in case of an emergency.

Until the launch, the astronauts will continue to train at Baikonur to prepare for their mission at the International Space Station.

Yi, who is set to become Korea's first astronaut, is set to blast off at 8:16 p.m. on April eighth, Korean standard time.
