The World Short Track Speed Skating Championships opened in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, on Friday for a three-day medals competition.

On Friday, South Korea's Song Kyung-taek won the men's 1,500-meter short-track final, grabbing the nation's first gold.

China's Wang Meng finished first in the women's 1,500-meter final.

Some 150 speedskaters from 32 countries are competing in the world championships.
