The nation’s first astronaut will carry the U.N. flag into space as part of efforts to promote world peace.
The Korea Aerospace Research Institute said Ko San will carry the flag to the International Space Station to commemorate the sending of the nation’s first astronaut into space on April eighth. The gesture will also serve to promote South Korea’s ties with the U.N. Office for Outer Space Affairs.
Ko will also carry flags from other countries and wave them when he travels into space.
After his mission, Ko will return the U.N. flag to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The flag will be put on display in the U.N. Office for Outer Space Affairs.
The Korea Aerospace Research Institute said it will receive the U.N. flag from the U.N. Office for Outer Space Affairs through the South Korean Embassy in Vienna next week.
