Champion boxer Choi Yo-sam has been declared brain dead, nine days after falling into a coma following a title match.
After conducting two exams and a brain scan early Wednesday, the Asan Medical Center declared the 33-year-old boxer brain dead.
Choi's organs will be donated in accordance with his wishes. His funeral will be organized by the Korea Boxing Commission.
The Korean boxer was injured while successfully defending his intercontinental flyweight title in a World Boxing Council match held December 25th. He collapsed shortly after the bout, during which he took a series of left and right hooks from Heri Amal of Indonesia. Choi fell into a coma soon after and underwent brain surgery but never regained consciousness.
