T-DMB Adopted as Global Standard

Domestic terrestrial digital multimedia broadcast technology has been adopted as a global standard by the International Telecommunication Union.

Korea is the first country to commercialize DMB technology by adding a multimedia function to digital radio technology of Europe.

Terrestrial DMB enables users to enjoy high-resolution multimedia programs on the move.
The adoption will pave a smoother way into the global mobile TV market for the Korean technology, and help Korean handset producers.

The Information and Communication Ministry said 191 ITU members made the decision Saturday morning.

The union also adopted other mobile media technologies owned by other countries as global standards, including U.S. chipmaker Qualcomm’s MediaFLO, European handset producer Nokia’s DVB-H and Japan’s OneSeg.
