Hynix Claims First 1Gb GDDR5 Graphics DRAM

Hynix Semiconductor says it's developed the world's first one-gigabit GDDR-Five graphics dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip for use in graphic cards and game consoles.

The company says the new fifth-generation graphics memory chip has by far the biggest capacity and highest data processing speed, with a transfer rate of 20 gigabits per second.

That's 60 percent faster than existing graphic DRAMs, and is expected to enhance the quality of next-generation Blu-Ray and full high definition visual displays.

Hynix will begin mass production in next year's first half.
