Qatar has announced its bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

Hassan Ali bin Ali, chairman of Qatar's Doha 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Bid Committee, on Friday declared his country's bid for the Olympics, expressing hope that people will come to Qatar and see a different Arab world than they perceive it to be.

If it succeeds, the oil-rich country will become the first Arab nation to host the games.

Doha will compete with Chicago, Tokyo, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, Prague and Baku, Azerbaijan.
