Samsung Electronics said Wednesday it's considering investing in a tenth-generation production line for liquid crystal displays (LCD) panels, skipping the ninth-generation.

Samsung executive Lee Sang-wan, who heads the company's LCD division, made the remark during a keynote speech at a flat-planel display show in Yokohama, Japan.

The envisioned tenth-generation production line would be for manufacturing LCD panels that are 50 inches or larger.

Currently, Japanese LCD giant Sharp Electronics is the only firm that has announced a plan for investing in tenth-generation facilities.
