A joint Korea-U.S. research team says it's developed a reflective material that gives liquid crystal displays greater clarity outdoors without colored filters or backlight.

The team led by Hangyang University chemistry Professor Kang Youngjong and MIT Professor Edwin Thomas says the tunable photonic crystal material can control light over a broad spectrum.

The team’s results were published Monday in the online edition of the international journal Nature Materials.

Tunable photonic crystals have been touted as a next-generation material with wide potential for application in TVs, watches, and computer displays.
