Scientists Discover Gene That May Suppress Cancer

A group of scientists say they've discovered a gene that triggers the self-destruction of cells linked to cancer.

The team led by Seoul National University Professor Chung Yong-geun published their findings in the latest online edition of the journal Nature Cell Biology.

The team said they found a gene called adenylate kinase 2 (AK2) which controls the self-destruction of errant cells. If these cells are left to grow they may cause diseases such as cancer.

Professor Chung said studies have shown that a weak AK2 gene can cause cancer cells to multiply, and that if the gene is resuscitated patients respond better to anti-cancer treatment.

He added if scientists could find a way to control triggering of the gene, it could suppress cancer growth or ease treatment.
