IAEA Inspects S.Korean Nuke Reactor

The International Atomic Energy Agency will conduct two-week inspections on a South Korean nuclear reactor to determine whether its continued operation is safe.

The Ministry of Science and Technology said Sunday that seven inspectors from the U.S., Sweden, Spain, Germany and Japan will visit the Gori number-one reactor on Monday until August third.

This inspection, which will include document reviews, discussions and on-site examinations, will decide if the reactor conforms to international standards and if its operations should be extended.

The Ministry of Science said the Korean Institute of Nuclear Safety is conducting an independent review on the reactor, and that the IAEA's results will be made public before the end of the year.

The Gori number-one nuclear reactor, the oldest commercial reactor in the country, halted operations last month and has been shut down for examinations.
