The Russian city of Sochi is at the center of a brewing controversy in Guatemala City, as reports surface that it is about to make a "surprise proposal" to strengthen its bid to host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
The committee to support the bid of Korea's Pyeongchang reacted strongly to reports of the surprise proposal as members of the International Olympic Committee gathered for a general assembly in the Guatemalan capital this week.
Korean bid committee Secretary-General Bang Jae-heung told a briefing Tuesday on the sidelines of the IOC meeting that nothing is known about the Russian proposal which will come during its presentation. IOC members will decide the host city in a vote on Wednesday.
Because IOC rules forbid competing countries to propose anything new during their presentations that wasn't in the original plans they submitted, Bang says that Korea will immediately file a protest if Sochi does make a surprise proposal.
In addition, he vowed to field a new proposal if the protest is not accepted.
