Campaigning Intensifies for 2014 Winter Games

The three cities competing to win their bid to host the 2014 Winter Olympics have launched full-fledged campaigns with only two left until the final ballots are cast at the International Olympic Committee’s general assembly in Guatemala.

Campaign committees for South Korea’s Pyeongchang, Russia’s Sochi, and Austria’s Salzburg all held news conferences with foreign media Tuesday and highlighted the strengths of their cities to host the international event.

The committee chief for Pyeongchang's bid committee Han Seung-soo and Gangwon Province Governor Kim Jin-sun spoke to the foreign media on why Pyeongchang should host the games, while Sochi and Salzburg brought in top sports stars from their countries to bolster support.

Meanwhile, President Roh Moo-hyun, who is in Guatemala to support the campaign, said in a news conference that the 2014 Olympics could speed up the peace process on the Korean Peninsula and that North and South Korea could create a joint team for the games.
