Disgraced stem cell scientist Hwang Woo-suk has reportedly submitted research papers to international scientific journals and plans to reapply for a license to resume research on human embryos in South Korea.
Researcher Kim Sue, who has worked with Hwang for seven years, told The Associated Press Friday that their research team at a lab in Yongin has successfully extracted stem cells from cloned embryos of animals such as pigs and cows.
Kim was a co-author of Hwang’s discredited 2005 paper in which they claimed to have extracted stem cells from cloned human embryos that were a genetic match for patients.
The researcher said that papers are either being written or have been submitted to science journals for review, and the lab hopes to have some published within a year.
AP reported that Hwang turned down its interview request and referred reporters to Kim instead.
