Wireless Tech to Become World Standard

Written: 2007-05-20 16:54:23Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

A wireless broadband Internet technology patented by Samsung Electronics and other Korean companies is expected to become the world industry standard.

The International Telecommunication Union will convene Monday a meeting in Kyoto, Japan, to conduct a final standardization evaluation of Mobile Wimax, the IMT-2000 third-generation mobile Web technology.

If Korea's wireless broadband technology is selected as the global standard, its patent holders can address stumbling blocks to the spread of Mobile Wimax such as radio frequency and economy of scale.

The American service provider Sprint Nextel will begin commercial service of the technology in major U.S. cities late this year, before full-fledged service starts in April next year.
