Midfielder Park Ji-sung of Manchester United opted for surgery to prevent his knee injury from worsening and to extend his career.

His father Park Sung-jong said that the soccer player’s injury was not that serious and he was not worried about his son's career.

Park senior returned home Tuesday from a hospital in the U.S. state of Colorado, where his son underwent surgery to repair torn cartilage.

According to the player's father, he was told by attending physician Richard Steadman that his son would not have had surgery under normal circumstances, but it could have ruined the Premier Leaguer's career if it had not been treated. Therefore, the English football club chose to have him undergo surgery.

Manchester United will announce its estimate for Park Ji-sung's return to the field after an additional physical in August.
