A group of domestic scientists has developed a high-speed superconducting motor much smaller and lighter than existing ones.

The team led by researcher Kwon Young-gil of the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute said Tuesday that they developed a 13-hundred horsepower motor that runs at 36-hundred revolutions per minute. The project was undertaken in cooperation with researchers from Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction.

Kwon said that the new motor is expected to greatly impact the market for industrial large-capacity motors as it can increase efficiency by two percent while reducing motor weight and size by 70 percent.
