Weather Agency to Analyze Nuke-Related Tremors

The Korea Meteorological Administration, or KMA, will now be charged with detecting man-made tremors caused by North Korea’s nuclear tests, taking over related tasks from the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources.

Science and Technology Minister Kim Woo-Sik told reporters Wednesday that the KMA will create a new seismological bureau responsible for detecting earthquakes and tremors including those related to North Korea's nuclear testing.

Pyongyang's nuclear test last October caused interagency confusion because the task of confirming the tremor was split between the weather agency and the geological institute.

Kim said that the decision to set up the new seismological bureau was made to prevent the recurrence of such confusion.
