Samsung Electronics says it has developed a liquid crystal display panel that can produce independent images on both sides of a mobile display.

The firm said Thursday that the double-sided LCD, which is based on thin-film transistor (TFT) architecture, can show two entirely different images or sets of visual data simultaneously on the front and back of the same screen.

Samsung said that the new double-sided LCD is two-point-six millimeters thick, which could reduce the overall thickness of mobile products by at least one millimeter.

The company plans to mass produce the new panel beginning in the first quarter after its unveiling at the Consumer Electronics Show, which opens in Las Vegas on Sunday.
