Domestic WiBro, DMB Lead the World: Gov't

The Ministry of Science and Technology says that South Korea leads in the world in two key communications technologies.

According to a ministry research study, the homegrown mobile Internet service WiBro and DMB have taken the lead in their respective fields since being developed last year, and are strong candidates to become global standards for fourth-generation communications.

WiBro, or wireless broadband, allows users to connect to the Internet while on-the-go at speeds of up to 60 kilometers per hour.

DMB, or digital multimedia broacasting, allows users to view television broadcasts in high-fidelity audio and video through wireless portable devices as small as a standard mobile phone.

The government is hoping to develop the two as growth engines for the information and communication field.
