Rising figure skating star Kim Yu-na has won the gold medal in the women's ISU Grand Prix Figure Skating Final in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The 16-year-old sensation has also risen to fifth place in the world rankings.

Kim shook off a back injury to upset defending champion Mao Asada of Japan, who won the silver.

Kim became the first Korean to win an ISU championship at this year's world juniors.

She will return home Tuesday after taking part in a figure skating gala show with other champions.
