The 15th Asian Games in Doha closed its 15-day run on Saturday. South Korea achieved its goal of finishing second in the standings, taking home 58 gold medals.
The nation's athletes edged Japan to retain the second spot they have held over three Asiads since 1998. They return home Sunday.
The games' flag was passed on to the next host city, Guangzhou, China during the closing ceremony.
South Korean teenage swimmer Park Tae-hwan, who won three gold, one silver and three bronze medals with two Games record, was named the Most Valuable Player of the 15th Asian Games.
South Korea finished strong, extending its gold streak on Friday.
Both the men’s volleyball and hockey teams clinched the gold after besting their Chinese rivals with the same score of three-to-one.
In fencing, South Korea took both men's and women's team competitions. In wrestling, Baek Jin-kuk beat Japan's Takafumi Kojima three-to-zero in the 66-kilogram freestyle match.
But in men's tennis singles, Lee Hyung-taek, who is ranked number-one in Asia, settled for a silver. Also, there was no medal for soccer as the South Korean team lost a third-place match to Iran.
