Mourners Line up to Honor Korean Equestrian in Doha

Mourners are lining up at a memorial altar in Doha for Korean horseman Kim Hyung-chil who died while competing in the Asian Games Thursday.

The Korean Olympic Committee and the organizing committee for the Doha Asian Games set up the altar early Friday in the athletes’ village.

Among those who visited the altar were Korean Olympic Committee President Kim Jung-kil and a group of South Korean athletes, as well as officials of the Qatar Olympic Committee.

Details on Kim’s funeral service and burial will be decided when Kim’s brother arrives in Doha later Friday.

Kim died after his horse fell on top of him while competing in the individual cross-country event at the Doha Racing and Equestrian Club on a rainy sixth day of competition. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a hospital.

A minute of silence was observed at all competition venues shortly after Kim's death, the first to occur during competition in the Asian Games' 55-year history.

Kim has been a member of Korea's equestrian team since the 1986 Asian Games in Seoul. He won a silver medal in the team competition at the 2002 Busan Asiad.
