Asian Immigrants in US at Lower Mental Health Risk

Written: 2006-12-01 17:28:19Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

A new study has found that Asian immigrants in the United States have a lower incidence of mental health problems than those born in the country.

A research team at the University of Washington interviewed nearly 21-hundred native-born and immigrant Asian Americans.

The survey found that while some kind of mental disorder will strike 48 percent of Americans, only one fourth of Asian Americans are likely to be affected.

The study also found that American-born women of Asian descent are twice as likely to have a depressive disorder as women born in Asia and living in the United States.

U.S.-born Asian men are more likely to have a substance abuse problem than those born in Asia.
