Daegu Aims to Host World Athletics Championships

The South Korean city of Daegu aims to host the 2011 World Championships in Athletics.

The city’s bidding committee said Monday that it would submit an application to host the event to the Monaco-based International Association of Athletics Federation, or IAAF.

The 104-item bidding application will include a government approval form signed by Prime Minister Han Myeong-sook and an organizers' agreement signed by Daegu Mayor Kim Bum-il and President of the Korea Athletics Federation Sin Pil-ryeol.

The submission will allow the IAAF to officially recognize the bid and to accept supplemental information from Daegu as the city promotes its candidacy at home and abroad.

The sports body will decide the host in Mombasa next March after conducting field inspections in January and April.

Besides South Korea, Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Russia, Australia, Sweden, Croatia and the United States are vying to host the championships.
