The country's first underwater seismograph was installed in the East Sea Monday to enable real-time monitoring of earthquakes and tsunamis.

The Korea Meteorological Administration says a remote-controlled robot installed the device two thousand meters below sea some 20 kilometers south of Ulleung Island.

The quake recorder is expected to speed information gathering and reduce damage in the event of natural disaster.
