Samsung Electronics says it has developed a one-gigabit dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip based on the latest 50-nano technology which makes use of circuits that are only 50 nanometers across, or one-two-thousandth the width of a human hair.
The world’s largest memory chip maker said Thursday that the 50-nano one-gigabit DRAM technology yields twice the productivity of the 80-nano technology currently in production. Its production volume is also 55 percent higher than that of the 60-nano technology, which was developed by Samsung last year.
Samsung said it sees the one-giga DRAM based on the 50-nano technology being used in high-capacity personal computers and mobile phones.
It plans to launch the new memory chip in the first quarter of next year, and expects its global market to grow to 55 billion dollars by 2011.
Samsung Electronics has led the DRAM manufacturing process by introducing the 100-nano technology in 2001, 90-nano in 2002, 80-nano in 2004 and 70-nano in October last year.
