A young Korean scientist says she has identified the cause of Type 1 or juvenile-onset diabetes.

Lee Yoo-jin, a graduate student at the University of Chicago, said Thursday that she found that immune cells in the body known as T-cells destroy insulin-producing beta cells as they are activated in the pancreas.

Her findings appear in the October online edition of Immunity, a sister publication of Cell.
