Gangwon Province will concentrate sports facilities in Pyeongchang County and Gangneung City to help the county's bid for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The provincial government and the Pyeongchang Olympic bidding committee said Monday that they decided to nix plans to disperse sports facilities around the province.
Instead, if the county wins the bid, it plans new sports facilities in Gangneung, 30 minutes from the main venue of Pyeongchang. Two athletes' villages will also be built in the two regions.
Under the plan, the maximum distance between sports facility clusters will drop to 82 kilometers from one-hundred-34 kilometers, reducing gaps with other candidate cities like Russia’s Sochi and Austria's Salzburg.
Gangwon Provincial Governor Kim Jin-sun said that the plan takes into account advice by experts and international sports organizations on facility centralization.
The host city for the 2014 Winter Olympics will be chosen in July next year.
