Korea Telecom says the nation’s first communications satellite serving both civic and military purposes has successfully entered a geostationary orbit as scheduled.

Mugunghwa-5 was launched last week from the Odyssey launch pad on the high seas south of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean.

After the launch, the satellite fired its thruster three times and prepared to enter the geostationary orbit by deploying its communication antenna and solar cells.

The Mugunghwa-5 satellite, also known as Koreasat-5, will test the functions of its major communication systems starting next month through mid-November before launching a commercial service in late November.
