Mugunghwa 5 Satellite to Launch Tuesday

Communication satellite Mugunghwa-5 will be launched Tuesday into orbit over international waters south of Hawaii.

Korea Telecom said Monday that it is the first dual use satellite to serve both commercial and military communication needs.

In the geostationary orbit 36-thousand kilometers above sea level, Mugunghwa-5 will collect data for satellite communication services in Korea, Japan, China and the Philippines.

The satellite will reach its orbit four days after the launch and will deploy its antenna and solar cells. The main control center in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province will then begin its ground control a month later, and after another three months, the satellite will begin servicing.
